The kick in the ass I needed
Hey everybody,
I’m David’s big brother, Greg. I’ve been keeping an eye on my little brother for years. I thought it was about time I stepped up to the plate to write a guest blog of my own, because that’s what big brothers can do.
First of all, David, I just want you to know that I really respect and admire you. I have appreciated reading your blog every week to not only get to know you better, but to better understand the battle you face every day without relief. I say get to know you better because as life would have it, you and I haven’t lived near each other for quite some time, especially with you running off to Germany all those years and gallivanting all over the country in your military service. Thank you for your service too! Even now, you live in Virginia and I live in Michigan, not exactly close enough for regular visits.
In your blog, you have been witty and incisive and oh so educational. When I lived in Maine, I had a member of my congregation who was also a PALS. I wish I knew then what you have taught me over these last few years. Perhaps I could have served him better. You have helped me so much. Thank you.
Now for everyone else reading this, David is my younger brother by 8 years. With mom and dad both working, I ended up spending a lot of time with David as his babysitter. I was also young enough to resent it sometimes. If I wanted to visit my friends in junior high, David had to come along. I remember walking pretty fast and he could barely keep up. (But maybe that helped him become a good soldier with all those long hikes.)
Finally, one of the reasons that I wanted to do this blog is to help David get the word out about what he is facing now. If you remember, a few weeks ago, David communicated that he was experiencing some trouble with eye control. His eyes are everything for David in the world of communication. He’s having some trouble controlling his eye gaze technology well enough to write his blog, but he is still fighting! I wanted to make sure that all of us, his readers, understand his latest challenge.
I also wanted to let him, and all of you, know what an amazing warrior I think he is. I also want to encourage all of you to consider, perhaps now it’s your turn to say thank you and to let him know what he means to you. I’m sure that he would find anything you have to share an encouragement. He needs us right now, to step up to the plate and help him shoulder this load.
Your final thoughts
Grace, mercy, and peace,
Greg

Thank you for the update, Greg. David, you are such an inspiration. I keep you in my prayers every night (and you, too, Greg). This has been a very long road but know that you have given so much on this journey and have helped so many with your experiences and positive attitude. God bless!

So many times, David's blog has almost been a reflection of my husband's ALS journey. I always appreciated his humor and insights, which helped me maintain perspective about our personal struggles. God bless you David, and keep fighting the good fight for all the PALS and CALS out here.
Thank you for the update Greg. Keep fighting David! Praying for you and your family. You have been such an inspiration and your blog has helped me and so many others. Sending strength and prayers.
