“ALS And Dry Eyes “ Chapter 169

If you have been reading my blog for awhile then you know my struggles with my eyes. I finally found a solution, though, and it’s a game changer.
Now, not only can I hear a gnat fart, but I can see it too . How did this happen, you may ask? What did you do? Well, I got new eyes!
Well ok... maybe not so literally, but it sure feels like it. I started having dry eyes because the weaker my muscles have gotten, the harder it’s become to close my eyes to keep them moisturized. So, for over a year we have used different eye drops and gels, creams, and pastes to keep them moist. We've been to the optometrist, the ophthalmologist, and tried new glasses. We've switched products multiple times and nothing was improving my dryness.
The more I used my eyes, the more sensitive and damaged the retina became. I even had one optometrist suggest suturing my eyelids together to make the opening smaller in an attempt to limit the surface exposure.
Thank God the ALS community is small, though. For many reasons, of course, but most recently because several of my readers reached out to me and suggested I try scleral lenses.
Scleral contact lenses are large-diameter, rigid, gas-permeable (RGP) lenses that vault over the entire cornea and land on the sclera (the white part of the eye). Their design creates a fluid-filled reservoir between the back surface of the lens and the cornea, providing optical correction and a protective, stable environment for the ocular surface.
I’ve been wearing the lenses for three days and I felt the burning and irritation go away almost immediately. I can see better than ever and the double vision is even improving. I have a follow up appointment in two weeks and we will see how it goes.
I can tell you this, if you have ALS, don’t wait like I did.
Love and Blessings

Thanks for sharing this! My mom has ALS as well and so I totally can relate to the things you talk about. I’m so glad to hear that the scleral lenses have been such a blessing.
I would like to share my mom’s blog with you as well. May you be blessed as I was reading yours. 🙏🏻
Dave, wondering if this should be shared with the VA?
That’s so awesome. You were able to accomplish this because of all the communication you’ve kept with everyone through writing. 🥰🙏☺️
I am so glad to hear this! Your eyes are so important to you and I imagine this is a huge relief!
