Have you ever plunged into a novel with your book club, emerging with a storm of questions about that shocking plot twist or lingering cliffhanger? The ensuing debates dissecting character motivations, speculating on endings, and exchanging personal takeaways are often the best part. But imagine bypassing the guesswork and directing those queries right to the author?
That's the magic I bring to my book. When a book club contacts me for a meet-and-greet Q&A, we set up a virtual hangout. It's a mutually beneficial setup, especially for me as an author navigating life with ALS:
- Forging Real Bonds: These sessions create authentic ties between writer and reader, transforming casual admirers into passionate supporters.
- Driving Book Sales: Enthusiastic chatter from participants frequently sparks recommendations and new buys.
- Raising ALS Awareness: Every chat becomes an opportunity to spotlight my experiences, shining a light on this tough disease.
Without a voice due to ALS, conventional promo tactics like snappy videos or live streams are out of reach building a huge social media presence just isn't practical. So, I innovate with networking and ads. My blog is my sanctuary, where I share reflections on my timeline. I join ALS gatherings for in-person (or virtual) connections. Social media? I dip in where I can, focusing on written posts and interactions.
Last week was a breakthrough: my inaugural book club session. Kelly reached out soon after my book's launch through a Facebook group for uplifting literature. Aware that typing replies is slow with ALS, I asked for questions upfront. This allowed me to prepare meaningful responses, letting me savor the event. My daughters stepped in as tech wizards, managing the setup and flow seamlessly.
Kelly and her crew logged on, brimming with energy to "meet" us. It was bizarre at first folks eager to probe my inspirations and ideas? As a longtime teacher, I'm accustomed to dispensing knowledge, but this felt profoundly personal, verging on vulnerable for a non-spotlight seeker. Yet, after two years chronicling my ALS path on my blog, I've let go of those hesitations. Nothing's off-limits anymore. Doubt it? Fire away with any question.
The gathering was a blast we chuckled, swapped tales, and connected over the book's core ideas. Meeting Kelly's group was delightful, and it's fueled my drive to wrap up the sequel for a potential encore. If your club is tackling my book and craves a virtual author drop-in, I'm all in. Shoot me a message let's connect!
