Happy New Year!🎈🎆
As I think back to a previous post about goals, I can’t help
but think about New Year’s resolutions and why we fail to keep them.
I’m going to lose weight, save money, and workout more. The problem isn't the goal itself, it is the timeline. We give ourselves excuses to fail. Fail to work on your resolution in January , you will start in February. Started on 1 January woo-hoo, but you quit in March because of one reason or another. Regardless of why, we are setting ourselves up to fail. A New Year's resolution gives ourselves time to give up. As time moves on, we tell ourselves we try again next year, and the cycle begins all over again.
PALS, though, understand that they may not have the time to wait and try again. We understand if we do, goals may not get accomplished. Therefore, and I'm speaking for myself here, my long range goals are no longer than one year. Consequently, I have set new goals for my New Year resolutions.
One day resolution ~ I will thank God he gave me one more day. If I fail, I will ask for His forgiveness and start again the next day, I only have to wait one day to try again. I have 365 times to succeed.
One week resolution ~ I will post on my blog on Mondays with relevant ALS related topics to help at least one person. I only have to wait one week to try again. I have 52 times to succeed.
One month resolution ~ keep my weight between 170-175 pounds. Should be easy right? I can’t exercise or change my diet, and I have to maintain a delicate balance between being bowel good or bowel explosion 💥 . I only have to wait one month to try again and oh, what a month it could be. Getting this wrong put me in the hospital twice in 2025, and I plan on getting it right 12 times this year .
One year resolution ~ complete the sequel to my first book and succeed 420 times this year. If I miss a few I will be ok because I won’t have to wait until 2027 to get it right. After all, I don't have time to wait a year, do you?
Don’t settle for 1 success when you can have 420.
13 of 13 and counting.
Love and Blessings

I gave up on New Year's resolutions years ago, and opt to pray daily for more patience and motivation. As for my husband, he has resolved to restart PT and to lose weight. I asked our VA PCP for a new PT consult, and I asked our VA nutritionist to reduce the calories for my ever-expanding husband. The calories have been reduced, and I'm sure our PCP will generate a new PT consult.

“After all, I don’t have time to wait a year, do you?”
David, you are truly inspiring, and I am really enjoying reading your post. You asked whether we have a year, and that is exactly the problem many of us face when we make promises to ourselves—we assume that tomorrow is guaranteed.
I used to live life carelessly and freely, thinking that because I was 20, 30 or 40, I had a whole lifetime ahead of me. But life is a flash—not only when we pass, but even while we are living it. In fact, it moves so fast that we often don’t even realize it’s moving.
Then you hit 60+, and you find yourself sitting there dumbfounded, asking,…
What a great perspective! Your brother Greg.
