“Walking in My Sleep” — Chapter 155

Recently a friend asked me if I ever got bored just sitting all day.
That question made me pause. At first, I didn’t know how to answer. Then I thought about what my days really look like and it hit me - I’m actually quite busy.
When I wake up around 9 a.m., the first thing I do is open my Bible app and read. It helps center me and gives my day purpose before it even begins. By the time I finish, my nurse comes in to prepare me for the day with my morning care, stretching, and making sure I’m comfortable and ready to face another day in this body that doesn’t always cooperate.
The next eight to ten hours are full in their own way. I spend time writing, surfing the internet, mentoring others, chatting with friends and fans, and catching up on shows. Some might call it lazy, I call it living differently. By the time evening rolls around, my body is tired and sore from sitting in one place so long... my backside aches literally 25/7. (Yes, I said 25). It feels like there’s always that extra hour of discomfort just waiting to remind me that I’m still human.
But nighttime, that’s where the real magic begins. And no, don’t go there, this blog is still rated PG.
When I fall asleep, something remarkable happens. I begin walking in my sleep. My dreams are vivid, alive, and full of movement. I walk. I run. I hold my family in my arms again. I can feel their warmth, their laughter, their tears against my shoulder.
Last night, I found myself standing in a wide, open field. The grass swayed gently in the breeze, and the sun felt warm on my face. When I looked over, I saw my cat, Athena, hopping through the tall grass behind a steel-gray bunny. At first, I thought she was chasing it to hunt, but then I realized they were playing. The bunny stopped, gave Athena a little lick on the face, and they both dashed off again, tumbling and darting with joy. I followed them until they disappeared under a small house surrounded by other bunnies. Athena was happy and so was I.
In other dreams, I find myself walking or reaching out with my arms, fully aware that I have ALS. Sometimes, I even think I’m healing, only to wake up exactly as I was when I fell asleep still, motionless.
To some, that might sound heartbreaking. But I don’t see it that way. Not at all. To me, my dreams are not a reminder of what I’ve lost; they’re a gift, a glimpse into what’s waiting for me. They are a window into a time when I will be whole again, whether that happens here on earth or from above.
So no, I’m not bored. Not even close. My days may seem quiet, but my nights are full of life, love, and motion. I’m simply saving my energy for the time when I’m Walking in My Sleep.
